Ensuring not to use medications that have reached their respective expiration dates and/or disposing of those that have remained unused is a good start to being a responsible consumer.
But there is so much more to learn. For instance, is there a right way to get rid of your medications? If there is, how do you go about it?
As your trusted retail pharmacy in Menifee, California, let us at Lotus Pharmacy enumerate the ways you can do so.
- Through take-back programs
Headed by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), take-back programs are programs that allow you to give your prescriptions back if they are unused. Check your local pharmacy in California or your local law enforcement for availability. - Through flushing
If a take-back program is not available in your independent pharmacy, you may choose to flush it down your toilet or sink instead. Be sure, however, to check if the said medication is allowed to be flushed. The FDA reminds us to not flush medicines that are not on the flush list. Check their flush list at www.fda.gov/drugs/disposal-unused-medicines-what-you-should-know/drug-disposal-fdas-flush-list-certain-medicines. - Through your household trash
Any medicine not on the flush list can be disposed along with your other trash. Before you do, however, make sure to mix it with something unpleasant or undesirable, such as cat litter or dirt to make it less appealing.
